Learning Starts Here

THE PHONE RANG. SOMETHING EXCITING was about to happen. On the other end of the call, a familiar voice asked me to join him in doing something groundbreaking, even revolutionary. And so on May 12, 2006, five young professionals, myself included, created a new nonprofit organization called Global Playground.

Education is the most promising means to eliminating poverty, violence, intolerance, and misunderstanding in our world. And not surprisingly, children are the most open to cross-cultural understanding. We've made it our goal to raise awareness and share resources with people of the developing world through education.

For our first project, we've decided to build a new school Uganda, in an area where less than half of the children have access to education. Global Playground is partnering with Building Tomorrow, an organization started by my good friend, George Srour (William and Mary '05). Last year, George single-handedly mobilized the W&M community to build a beautiful, three-story brick school in Kampala that now reaches 1,000 orphans every day. And we're thrilled to help him build his next school.

It costs $32,000 to build a school in Uganda (the cost of a new car). We've identified the rural community of Wakiso (just west of Kampala) as the site for our new school... and they are very excited to participate: from the planning and funding (they make a commitment to contribute about $4,000) to the construction and operation.

It's Christmastime, so why not make a gift in honor of your family and friends! Every little bit helps. And Global Playground is a 501(c)(3) public charity, so any donations you make are tax-deductible. Giving online is easy and secure.

This is just the first of many projects around the world that Global Playground will pursue. And wherever we build a school, we will dedicate part of the school to serve as a playground – because all children deserve a place where they can be children.

I'm so excited to share this new project with each of you, so please drop me a line and tell me what you think! I'd love to hear your ideas and answer your questions.

All my best wishes for this Christmas season!

Cheers,
Armistead
